Mental Health Support
Taking care of your mental health is just as important as treating a physical illness.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, burnt out, or simply not like yourself — support is available in Montreal.
You do not need to wait until things feel “serious” to seek help.
If You Are in Immediate Crisis
If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself:
Call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
You can also call: 1-866-APPELLE (1-866-277-3553)
A free, confidential mental health crisis line available 24/7 in Quebec.
You can also call 811 and choose the mental health option to speak with a professional.
If you are unsure what to do, call one of the numbers above. Support is available.
For Non-Emergency Support
If you are struggling but not in immediate crisis, you have several options.
Option 1: Campus Counselling Services
If you are a student at McGill, Concordia, or UQAM:
Your university offers mental health services including:
• Short-term counselling
• Individual therapy
• Crisis appointments
• Workshops
Campus services are often covered by student fees and familiar with academic pressure.
Option 2: Private Therapy (With Insurance)
Most international student insurance plans include coverage for psychological services.
Before booking, check coverage limits, reimbursement amounts, and license requirements. You may need to pay upfront and submit receipts for reimbursement.
Option 3: Public Mental Health Services (RAMQ)
If you are covered by RAMQ, you can speak to a family doctor and request a referral.
You may be referred to a public psychologist or social worker. Public services are covered but may involve longer wait times.

Check Your Insurance Coverage
Before booking, log into your student insurance portal or review your plan details.
Search for a Licensed Therapist
Search online for “Psychologist Montreal” or “Therapist Montreal English”. Look for licensed professionals with experience in student issues.
Contact the Therapist
Most therapists require you to email or fill out a contact form. You do not need to explain everything in your first message.
Confirm Fees and Insurance
Ask about cost per session, duration, and if you will receive a receipt for insurance reimbursement.
Attend Your First Session
The therapist may ask about your goals. It is okay if the first therapist is not the right fit. You can try another.
If You Feel Unsure About Starting Therapy
You can begin by:
• Calling 811 for guidance
• Booking a campus counselling intake session
• Speaking to a family doctor
Starting is often the hardest part.
Common Reasons Students Seek Support
• Relationship stress
• Burnout
• Difficulty sleeping
• Being far from family
• Anxiety
• Academic pressure
• Loneliness
• Culture shock
A Reminder
You do not need to wait until things feel severe. If something feels off, that is reason enough to seek support.
Moving to a new country, studying in another language, or living far from family can affect your mental health. Seeking help is not weakness. It is part of taking care of yourself. Support is available.
